An Original 1961 Vintage Theatrical French 7" x 9 1/2" [18 x 24 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) A Bout de Souffle (released in the U.S. in 1961 as "Breathless"), the classic 1960 Jean-Luc Godard French New Wave romantic gangster crime thriller (about a small time thief who steals a car and murders a policeman, and he tries to persuade his beautiful American journalism student girlfriend to run away to Italy with him, but she has misgivings) starring Jean Seberg, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Daniel Boulanger, Jean-Pierre Melville, Henri-Jacques Huet, Liliane David, Claude Mansard, and Van Doude. Note that this movie, together with Francois Truffaut's "Les quatre cents coups" began the French "New Wave", which revolutionized film-making, not only in France, but the world over! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that most of the French stills like this one that we have auctioned (see below) have a vertical orientation and have a large blank area at the bottom. However, because THIS still has a horizontal orientation, it does not have that blank area. Note that this still has a wonderful provenance! In April 2022, we auctioned a group of 28 stills similar to this one, all of which were candid images like this one, and those sold for $1,111 for all. After that, we auctioned a number of single similar excellent stills, and those have sold for prices ranging from $69 to $238. Now we are auctioning three more, also with excellent images! Like this one, each of the previous ones had a blank area at the bottom, and were "country of origin" stills for this French movie! Perhaps they were intended to be sent to magazines to use in articles about the movie, or perhaps they were intended to be used as "export" stills, used in non-French speaking countries, where they could be overprinted in the blank area with information in the language of the country using them, but those are only guesses. Our consignor (who also consigned the previous ones) got them from a friend of the still photographer on this classic movie, Raymond Cauchetier, and he may well have had them printed as test prints, but we have no way of knowing (Cauchetier passed away last year at 101!). We had never even auctioned even one of these before we were consigned the previous ones (and in fact, other than first release French posters, we have only auctioned a single French lobby card, three oversized French stills, a French pressbook, and nothing else)! Condition: very good to fine. Learn More about condition grades
