An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Panama, the 1940 Norman Foster Central America Asian detective mystery crime thriller ("One puff from a deadly cigarette... and the fleet is marked for Doom! Can Chan strike fast enough?"; "One minute more... and the fleet is doomed!"; "A plot so fiendishly clever even Chan is astounded!"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Sidney Toler (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Jean Rogers, Lionel Atwill, Mary Nash, Victor Sen Yung (billed as "Sen Yung"), Kane Richmond, Chris-Pin Martin, Lionel Royce, Helen Ericson, Jack La Rue, and Addison Richards. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that this only is the second time we have ever auctioned a one sheet poster for this movie (and we have only seen one U.S. insert [and one made by "The Other Company"] and a few lobby cards!) What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some tiny bits of surface paper loss on parts of some folds. It had surface paper loss in the center of the top blank border and in the top blank corners, where tape was removed, with some pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
