The doctor is HANDSOME! The story is THRILLING!"; in this movie, Dr. Gillespie is having to choose an assistant to replace Dr. Kildare, and he is deciding between Keye Luke and Van Johnson, and the winner will be the one who does the best job on dealing with a new medical case) starring Lionel Barrymore (reprising his role as Doctor Gillespie), Van Johnson, Marilyn Maxwell, Keye Luke, Ava Gardner (very young in this role and 5th billed, but prominently featured on the advertising as "the patient"!), Alma Kruger and "Rags" Ragland. Note that the Dr. Kildare movies were made between 1938 and 1947, but that Lew Ayres left the series in 1942, and six more films were made WITHOUT Dr. Kildare, but WITH Dr. Gillespie (played as always by Lionel Barrymore), who became top billed in those six movies, and of course, they could not be official "Dr. Kildare movies", because the lead character was no longer at the hospital.
