A Group of 7 Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Progressive Proof One-Sheet Movie Posters (1sh; measure 28" x 42" [71 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) The Dead Soul, the 1915 Wilbert Melville silent Algeria religious redemption sailing ship kidnapping melodrama ("Drama in three acts"; about a minister that is shanghaied by a cruel captain and the minister tries to reform him, telling him that evil begets evil, and that the captain's evil deeds will destroy him, but of course, the captain is a nonbeliever, but at the movie's climax, the captain and the minister both have plague, and the minister finds a single dose of medicine, and he starts to inject it in the captain, but the captain does his first good deed ever, and tells the minister to give it to himself, "because he is a better man", but the minister refuses and gives it to the captain, who recovers, and sees the minister dead next to him, and says a prayer for him!) starring George Routh, Lee Shumway (billed as "L.C. Shumway"), Eleanor Bevins, Riccardo Espino, Melvin Mayo, and Adelaide Bronti. Note that the plot of this movie borrows heavily from Jack London's novel "The Sea-Wolf", which had been written in 1904, and was first made into a movie in 1913, two years before this. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that only people who are familiar with printing know that in the early days of full-color printing, the printers would print test examples of the different colors of each poster to see that they were colored correctly, and then they would run at last one example of all the colors together, before printing the final version. Normally each of the progressive tests are one color, but this set of seven includes five with one color each, one with all the colors, and one that was printed with four of the colors. Also note that later color printing became known as "four color" printing, because it became standard to have four colors, but in these early days, posters could have five or more colors, if the printer felt the final product would benefit from it (and indeed, having more than four colors adds a deep richness to the posters that was lost once they went to only four color printing). We have only auctioned a limited number of progressive proof posters over our many years of auctioning, and we have never auctioned ANYTHING from this movie before! Also note that these one-sheets, which measure 28" x 42" [71 x 107 cm], which was the standard size for many one-sheets in 1915 (it would not be several years before almost all one-sheets were 27" x 41). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. Because these were "test" posters, they were never used, and they were in really excellent condition prior to linenbacking, and they display wonderfully! Learn More about condition grades
