eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 3m0303 MALTESE FALCON LC 1941 Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, MacLane, Ward Bond, rare! Date Sold 2/23/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Maltese Falcon, the classic 1941 John Huston romantic detective crime film noir ("A story as explosive as his blazing automatics"; "Based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett, Author of 'The Thin Man'"; "Screen Play by John Huston"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Humphrey Bogart (as Sam Spade), Mary Astor (as Brigid O'Shaughnessy), Gladys George (as Iva Archer), Peter Lorre (as Joel Cairo), Barton MacLane (as Lt. Dundy), Lee Patrick (as Effie), Sydney Greenstreet (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Kasper Gutman), Ward Bond (as Tom Polhaus), Jerome Cowan (as Miles Archer), and Elisha Cook Jr. (as Wilmer Cook, the "gunsel"). Note that this was the SECOND re-make of this movie (it had been made in 1931 under the original title, and in 1936 as "Satan Met a Lady", starring Bette Davis in the lead role, but it was THIS version by John Huston, with his screenplay that closely followed the Dashiell Hammett novel, with superlative acting, which is an all-time classic) Note that some of the U.S. posters for this movie used images of Bogart from the 1941 film "High Sierra" (the same is true of some posters for "All Through the Night"!). Note that in all three of these movies (The Maltese Falcon, All Through the Night, and High Sierra), Humphrey Bogart only got the lead part because George Raft turned down the lead in all three! Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned this great lobby card once before, and that was 15 years ago, when it sold for $3,261! If this card looks familiar to you, it is because we DID have it at auction in 2019. It closed at $1,050, but afterwards, we were contacted by the high bidder, who told us his account had been "hacked", so we had to cancel the auction, and we are now re-auctioning it (and that "result" does not appear in our auction history, because we never include sales that "fell through", only ones where the buyer actually paid). Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. The card had some small tears, smudges, stains, and pinholes around the edges. It had a pair of staple holes in the background above Bogart's head and a pinhole in the center of the card, in Bogart's sleeve, with two near the bottom center of the image. It had a pinhole in the green area at bottom center above the second "e" of "Maltese". Many years ago, some very amateur restorer put paper tape on the back of several of the border defects, and they taped pieces of paper to the back of two tears. They then used ink pens to "touch up" the front of the card, where there were pinholes in the solid colored areas. Because none of this "restoration" is in the stars' faces, it is not all that distracting. While one could choose to display this card as it is, I would think many collectors would take advantage of the great advances in restoration that have been made over the decades since this amateur restoration was performed. They could give the card to a really top restorer, and after proper restoration (either with paperbacking or "gel backing" the card), the card will display wonderfully, and most of its restoration will be in the border areas. Note that the colors on the card are bright and not faded, which is a big plus. But please look closely at our super-sized images of both the front and back of the card before bidding on this rare and desirable lobby card! Learn More about condition grades
