An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Under the Lash, the 1921 Sam Wood silent South Africa romantic love triangle melodrama ("Adapted from the novel 'The Shulamite' by Alice and Claude Askew and the play by Claude Askew and Edward Knoblock"; about a Boer farmer in South Africa who has a beautiful young wife, and then an Englishman visits, and he and the wife fall in love, and the farmer threatens to kill his wife, and the Englishman kills him, and he and the widow try to disguise the crime, and they get away with it, but they separate, and later, they finally reunite) starring Gloria Swanson, Mahlon Hamilton, Russell Simpson, Lillian Leighton, Lincoln Stedman, Thena Jasper, and Clarence Ford. Note that this was based on a 1906 novel "The Shulamite" (a Shulamite was a person in the Bible in The Song of Songs). It was soon adapted into a very popular play and the first silent movie was made from it in 1915, called "The Folly of Desire", and in 1921, this second silent movie was made, again with a new title, with Gloria Swanson in the lead role.
