An Original Vintage Theatrical Autographed Deluxe 5" x 7" [13 x 18 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Chester Morris was an actor from the 1910s to the 1970s. He was one of those great "square-jawed" leading men, but he did not start out that way! He made his first movie when he was 17, and he had some success in movies, but he went to Broadway, where he got some leading roles while still a teenager, and billed himself as "The youngest leading man in the country"! In 1923, he returned to Hollywood but did not have lots of success until movies started to talk, and he was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for "Alibi" in 1929, his first talking picture. He had a major role in "The Big House" the following year, which made him a top star, which he remained through most of the 1930s. He successfully transitioned to supporting roles in the 1940s, but he had the lead role in the "Boston Blackie" series of movies in the early 1940s. He passed away in 1970 at the age of 69 after a battle with cancer. Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by Chester Morris! Also note that this still measures 5" x 7" [13 x 18 cm], but it has not been trimmed. Finally, note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock. Note that this still was consigned to us by legendary collector/dealer Marty Davis! Marty was hired in 1972 to evaluate the entire collection of W. Ward Marsh (1893-1971), who was the film critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper from 1919, until his retirement in 1970. In 1919 Marsh wrote his first of 23,000 movie reviews for the Plain Dealer. Marsh died less than a year after his retirement in 1970. His library, and photographic and memorabilia archives were given to the proprietor of Cleveland's finest bookstore. Marty Davis was the first person with a background in film history and collectibles to examine the archives. He worked for three to four hours a day, for six months, and his compensation was his pick of the archives. This still is from the W. Ward Marsh archives, and all were stamped on the back by Marty Davis to indicate that they came from this legendary collection. Marty tells us that he thinks it likely that Ward Marsh obtained this autograph in person! Condition: very good to fine. Learn More about condition grades
