Date Sold 6/12/2011Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Linenbacked Special Movie Poster (measures 12" x 23 1/4") (Learn More) The Flame of New Orleans, the 1941 Rene Clair Louisiana romantic love triangle comedy (about a beautiful cabaret singer who can't choose between a rich banker and a dashing sea captain) starring Marlene Dietrich, Bruce Cabot, Roland Young, Mischa Auer, Andy Devine, Melville Cooper, Eddie Quillan, Laura Hope Crews, Frank Jenks, Theresa Harris, Clarence Muse, and Shemp Howard (in an uncredited role as an "Oyster Bed Cafe Waiter"!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Alberto Vargas Important Added Info: Note that this is a very special poster! Universal had spent a lot of money hiring Alberto Vargas to do the sexy pinup of Marlene Dietrich used on several of the posters, and they wanted to make additional use of it when they promoted the movie to theater owners. So they printed a special 12 1/4" x 23 1/4" poster, and they had it inserted into an issue of The Hollywood Reporter as a fold-out (like a Vargas centerfold in Esquire magazine)! We can only imagine how readers of that daily magazine reacted when they opened the new issue and saw this centerfold, which is all the more striking, because it has a solid background and no writing at all other than Vargas' signature. The fold-out flap had the credits for the movie on it and there were four other pages in the issue for the film which solely had the name of the movie and a different credit in the top of each page (oddly, on the page for Bruce Cabot, they included a photographic image of him, perhaps so he wouldn't feel slighted by the Dietrich fold-out). We don't know if this fold-out ad was only placed in The Hollywood Reporter, or if it was also placed in other exhibitor magazines, because we have never seen any other magazines with this incredible fold-out. Someone removed this poster from the issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine (or possibly another magazine if there was one) and had it linenbacked, and we are offering that linenbacked poster in this auction. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had a huge number of creases, smudges, and scuffs in the bottom 5" and in the top 2". There was a fold down the middle, one down the right 4", one across the top 2", and one across the bottom 3". Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Given the many defects, the poster was well backed, and backing has diminished how noticeable the defects are, but you can still see signs of them, so bear that in mind before placing a bid!
