An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10 1/4" [20 x 26 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

The Temptress, the 1926 Fred Niblo & Mauritz Stiller silent South America romantic melodrama ("from the Novel by Vicente Blasco Ibanez"; filmed in the Mojave Desert, which stood in for the South American setting in the movie) starring Greta Garbo, Antonio Moreno, Marc McDermott, Lionel Barrymore, H.B. Warner, Armand Kaliz, and Roy D'Arcy. Mauritz Stiller was the Swedish director who came to the U.S. with Garbo, and he clashed with the MGM executives. He was fired ten days into production, and was replaced by Fred Niblo, and they are co-credited as the directors. Note that there are two things really interesting about this movie! The first is that the movie has a sad ending, and apparently, when Louis B. Mayer saw it, he was shocked, and had them film a new "happy" ending, and ordered that theaters be given the choice of showing the happy version or the sad version! Second, all of the original advertising for this movie prominently bills H.B. Warner as one of Garbo's lovers. Yet, all the major online databases do not mention Warner at all! Does that mean that his part was cut out of the movie (either before it was released or at a later time)? If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Important Added Info:

Note that in our last set of auctions that include multiple stills from single titles, we had 72 sets of stills that came from a wonderful group of just-discovered stills that are from 1927 to 1929, with the majority from 1928 exactly. Now, we are auctioning the remaining stills from this wonderful group, 131, all in separate auctions. In addition to them including a LOT of previously unseen stills (and sometimes from incredibly rare titles!), most of these stills have either snipes on the bottom or back, and many have some pencil writing on the back about the movie or actors. After these stills are auctioned, there will be no more stills from this wonderful collection!

Condition: good to very good.
