Nicholas and Alexandra, the 1971 Franklin J. Schaffner English historical Russia royalty biographical melodrama ("From the book by Robert K. Massie"; about the last Czar of Russia and his wife; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Michael Jayston (in the title role "as Nicholas"), Janet Suzman (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; in the title role "as Alexandra"), Harry Andrews, Tom Baker (as Rasputin), Michael Bryant, Maurice Denham, Jack Hawkins, Ian Holm, Curd Jurgens (billed as "Curt Jurgens"), John McEnery, Eric Porter, Michael Redgrave, Alan Webb, Irene Worth, and Laurence Olivier. Note that this English movie premiered in England in November of 1971, and then briefly played in the U.S. in December of 1971 (to qualify for the Academy Awards), but then had its wide release in the U.S. in 1972, AFTER it had won Academy Awards (it only won Best Art Direction and Costume Design). A one-sheet was made before the Academy Awards that had a lot of blank area at the top, so that an Academy Awards logo and text could be inserted there, and that was done for the regular release in the U.S. in 1972.
