An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Sheet Music (measures 10 3/4" x 13 3/4" [27 x 35 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More) The Marx Brothers were five American brothers who formed a legendary comedy act, first on the stage with four brothers, then briefly with all five, but Gummo left the act before their first movie, The Cocoanuts in 1929. Zeppo would appear in their first few films, but then he left the act as well. Of course, the most famous of the brothers were Chico, Harpo, and Groucho. They initially worked at Paramount Pictures, and then shifted to MGM. In the late 1940s, they split up, and Groucho went on to a very long and successful solo career, including hosting the classic TV show "You Bet Your Life". Some of their best movies include: Duck Soup, A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, Go West, and Horse Feathers Artist: Starmer Important Added Info: Note that this sheet music is for the song "Sailin' Away on the Henry Clay". We have only auctioned this sheet music once before and that example has now been reconsigned to us, so this is still the only example of this sheet music we have ever auctioned! This was a song they sang in their show "Home Again". They started that show in 1915, when they were "Four Marx Bros." (Groucho, Harpo, Chico & Gummo). The show continued into 1917, when they came to their home state, and 14 year old Zeppo joined the act, and they were, for a very short time, the "Five Marx Bros.". But then, Gummo joined the army (supposedly he said, "Anything is better than being an actor"!), and they were back to being "Four Marx Bros." While this sheet music is dated 1917, the image is from before Zeppo joined the act, and so it shows Groucho, Harpo, Chico & Gummo. It is the earliest Marx Bros. item we have ever auctioned, by a number of years (and of course, the brothers are not very recognizable compared to how they looked over a decade later when they made their first movie! Condition: good to very good. There are creases and light stains around the edges of the sheet music, with a few tears. Someone put several pieces of clear tape on the inside of the spine, because the covers were separated in several areas. But fortunately, the image of the Marx Bros. is in pretty nice condition (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
