Date Sold 6/4/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical English Movie Pressbook (English pb; measures 11 1/4" x 17 1/2" [29 x 44 cm]; 8 pages) (Learn More) The Proud Valley (released in the U.S. in 1941 as "The Tunnel"), the 1940 Pen Tennyson English Welsh coal mining cave-in disaster melodrama (about an American seaman who goes to work in a Welsh mining town; there is a cave-in and the workers want to rescue the trapped miners, but the management refuses; ultimately, Robeson sacrifices his life so that the trapped miners can be rescued) starring Paul Robeson (one of the first black African American actors to achieve success in mainstream sound movies; "The Samson of Song!"), Edward Chapman, Simon Lack, Rachel Thomas, Dilys Thomas, Edward Rigby, and Janet Johnson. Note that the producers of this melodrama wanted to give Paul Robeson a chance to use his magnificent voice, so they had scenes where he sings in the local church choir! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned two U.S. one-sheets, two British quads, an English pressbook, a Danish program, and a few English stills from this movie (and NO other movie paper of any kind) until we received this second English pressbook, which is a "country of origin" item for this English movie! Also note that the movie's working title was "David Goliath", and when the pressbook was prepared, they put "formerly 'David Goliath'" under the title on the cover, but that title appears nowhere else that we could find! Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this English pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Finally, note that this English pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle. The covers are separated at the spine and there is wear around the edges and along the fold.
