An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Swedish Poster (Learn More) Foolish Wives, the 1922 Erich von Stroheim silent society romantic gambling con man melodrama ("By and with Von Stroheim"; "THE FIRST REAL MILLION DOLLAR PICTURE"; produced by Carl Laemmle; set right after World War I in Monaco, and Von Stroheim is a supposed Russian count traveling with his two pretty "cousins", but actually, the trio are con artists and counterfeiters, cheating anyone they can, and then Von Stroheim encounters a rich American couple and sets his sights on the neglected wife) starring Rudolph Christians, Miss du Pont (she was born Patricia Hanson, but after she made a few movies, she was "discovered" by Erich Von Stroheim and cast in this movie, and she was then always billed solely as "Miss DuPont"), Maude George, Mae Busch, and Erich von Stroheim. Note that this has widely been called the very first movie to cost over one million dollars, and Universal advertised it that way. But they didn't advertise that Von Stroheim's wild spending threatened to bankrupt the studio! He shot the film entirely on Universal's back lots, which should have saved money, but he meticulously recreated large parts of Monaco there, which accounted for a lot of the then insane budget!
