An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 11" x 13 3/4" [28 x 35 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Charles Laughton was an English actor from the 1920s to the 1960s. He appeared on the stage in England beginning in 1926, and he appeared in a few movie shorts in the 1920s, but his acting career really did not begin until 1931. Some of his movies include: Witness for the Prosecution, Spartacus, Mutiny On The Bounty (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Advise and Consent, The Private Life Of Henry VIII (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), and Island of Lost Souls. He was married for many years to Elsa Lanchester, although he was reportedly gay. He directed a single movie, "Night of the Hunter", and because it was not financially successful, he never directed another, which is a real shame, because that movie is considered a major classic by most critics! Laughton passed away in 1962 at the age of 63. Important Added Info: Note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock and it has an embossed photographer's stamp in one of the bottom corners. Also note that this still measures 11" x 13 3/4" [28 x 35 cm]. Note that this is one of 100 deluxe oversized stills (measuring 11" x 14" or similar) which were consigned to us, and they all originated from the legendary James Card Collection! James Card was a film preservationist who, starting in 1948, worked at the newly created George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, and he helped build their massive motion picture collection, preserving movies that had been forgotten at that time. In 1955, he discovered that Louise Brooks was living as a recluse in New York City, and he persuaded her to move to Rochester, where she wrote many letters and some books about her legendary career. Not only do these 100 oversized stills (which we are auctioning individually) have wonderful "provenance", but there is also no fear that they are not from their first release (and many of the stills have photographer stamps on the back or embossed, and some have other information on the back, and several have a stamp that identifies them as being from the "James Card Collection"!
