An Original Vintage Linenbacked French "Affiche" Poster (23x32; measures 23 3/4" x 31 1/4" [60 x 79 cm]) (Learn More) Old Acquaintance, the 1943 Vincent Sherman romantic love triangle best friends melodrama ("'I know what every woman expects from love ... And What She Accepts If She Is Wise!'"; "There are certain things one just doesn't do! But I Did"; "From the Stage Play by John Van Druten"; about a pair of female childhood best friends who help each other professionally, but after a long time, one of the husbands chases after the other woman, causing much tension in their relationship) starring Bette Davis, Miriam Hopkins, Gig Young, John Loder, Dolores Moran, Philip Reed, and Roscoe Karns. Note that this movie was re-made in 1981 as "Rich and Famous". Note that Gig Young had started making movies in 1940 under his given name of "Byron Barr", but he had little success and was mostly uncredited. In 1942, he played a character called "Gig Young" in "The Gay Sisters", and he changed his name to his character's name, and he started having much greater success, playing young romantic leads (and over the next couple of decades, he continued to play romantic parts, often lecherous older men!). Artist: Vincent Cristellys Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this French poster, and only one in the last 16 years! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfold and smudges, tiny tears, and tiny creases on parts of both folds. It had some small tears and tiny paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. After the poster was backed (with only slight excess on parts of the borders and 1/2" of excess at the bottom), the poster was roughly handled, and it acquired a semi-circular crease in the upper right background area, and also a tear in the border of the poster at the end of that area. The poster is also now separating from the linen in the border at the end of the crease. The poster can still be displayed as it is, or certainly, additional restoration could be performed, but bear all of the above in mind before bidding. Learn More about condition grades
