La Vallee (released in the U.S. as "Barbet Schroeder's The Valley Obscured by Clouds"), the 1972 Barbet Schroeder French jungle adventure melodrama ("A film you can feel"; "a sensual path to the unknown"; about a woman searching for exotic feathers in upland New Guinea but who finds much more in the Mapunga tribe, hippies, mind expanding drugs, and 'The Valley Obscured by Clouds'; "with music by Pink Floyd") starring Bulle Ogier, Michael Gothard, Jean-Pierre Kalfon, Valerie Lagrange, Jerome Beauvarlet, Monique Giraudy, and The Mapunga Tribe and its Chiefs

Artist: Philip Castle
Important Added Info: Note that this is one of three different British quad posters (one is full-color, one is blue, and one is green) from "The Valley Obscured by Clouds" that was consigned to us from the person who created the ad campaign for the British release of Barbet Schroeder's THE VALLEY, distributor-art director Mike Kaplan (LAGOON) together with noted airbrush artist Philip Castle, which was their first collaboration after A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. We asked Mr. Kaplan to provide us with the background on these three posters, and he sent us the following information: "The film is a sensual, contemplative journey towards a kind of enlightenment. An ingenious campaign was designed to indicate the journey whereby two single colored posters with appropriate slogans were first displayed in successive weeks before the full color poster (i.e. the poster of full understanding) was revealed. The campaign-- used in subways and wildposted on building sites throughout London -- began with the single GREEN poster ("There is no fear in THE VALLEY), followed the next week by the BLUE poster ("A sensual path to the unknown") and on the third week, the full color poster (all three had the same image). The three posters were used sequentially, so that all three were only seen together for one week, after which only the full color poster was used.

The design itself was inspired by Maxfield Parish and became one of the most admired posters of the 1970's. When the film was released in America a few years later, Kaplan (a vintage poster collector) had the full color design reprinted in the original quad format and that is the poster that has been sold and auctioned since. The wildposting firm in New York held back half of their allotment, recognizing their appeal, instead of posting them as contracted, later selling them to dealers. One can identify the British posters by the paper difference and the bottom information showing the UK printer.

Of the three original UK posters, the green and blue versions were printed in more limited quantities. The BLUE is the rarest, as a number were purchased by a British design magazine.

The full color poster was reportedly named the BEST POSTER OF THE YEAR by a New York Art Director Association."

Condition: very good to fine. There are some minor border defects.

This week we have given a more detailed overall condition grade along with more details about the condition described in words. Of course, we could not describe every single defect, plus there are some defects (like creasing, tape on the back, extremely tiny pinholes, etc) which can be VERY difficult to see, even in our largest "super-sized" image. Therefore we strongly recommend that you BOTH read our written description of the item, AND ALSO look at our super-sized image to see the extent of the defects that we describe and to examine the poster for minor defects that we did NOT describe.
