An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War II Poster (measures 18" x 25" [46 x 64 cm]) (Learn More)

Pvt. Joe Louis Says, the 1942 U.S. World War II (WWII) war poster ("We're going to do our part, and we'll win because we're on God's side") featuring an image of heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis charging with bayoneted rifle. Joe Louis was a legendary black African American boxer from the 1930s to the 1950s. He was the world heavyweight boxing champion from 1937 to 1950, winning 26 championship fights during that time. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was placed in its Special Services Division to raise morale in the troops and back home. He was discharged in 1945 after he was awarded the Legion of Merit (a military decoration rarely awarded to enlisted soldiers) for "incalculable contribution to the general morale". He passed away in 1981 at the age of 66. This poster certainly seems not only "heavy handed" to today's world, but outright "over the top", especially because it is invoking God's name, but of course America during World War II knew that the Nazis could potentially conquer the entire world and they wanted to make sure every citizen did all they could to keep that from happening, and posters like this certainly drove that message home!
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this war poster!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was never folded. It had creases scattered throughout the top and bottom tagline areas, and some scattered in the rest of the poster, with creases and tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
