An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Sands of Iwo Jima, the classic 1950 Allan Dwan World War II (WWII) United States Marine Corps (USMC) military action thriller ("A great human story... Makes a mighty motion picture!"; "The Marines have landed... And the situation is well in hand!"; "The Marines' Greatest Hour!") starring John Wayne (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), John Agar, Adele Mara, Forrest Tucker, Wally Cassell, James Brown (NOT the famous singer!), Richard Webb, Arthur Franz, Julie Bishop, James Holden, Peter Coe, and Richard Jaeckel NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that there are two different styles of half-sheet poster for this movie. What is odd is that the two posters are very similar to each other, each with the image of John Wayne in full gear charging, and the flag raising image with the soldiers, but one has John Wayne hugging Adele Mara, and the other has him kissing Adele Mara! This poster is not marked, but it is NOT the style A poster, and since we know that there IS a style A poster on this title, we assume that this poster is the style B, so we are referring to it in that fashion. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had surface paper loss in John Wayne's cheek at upper left. It had a number of drip stains scattered across the bottom of the poster. It had some tears, smudges, and small paper loss around the edges, with some smudges, creases, and stains scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Given the poster's significant defects, the restorer did a pretty nice job, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
