eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result d358 BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ linen one-sheet movie poster '62 Telly Savalas Date Sold 4/15/2008Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Birdman of Alcatraz (released in other English-speaking countries as "The Man of Alcatraz"), the classic 1962 John Frankenheimer Kansas Leavenworth prison convict crime biography melodrama ("Inside the rock called Alcatraz they tried to chain a volcano they called 'The Bird Man'!"; "Based on the book by Tom Gaddis"; the true story of double murderer Robert Stroud, sentenced to life in prison, who, after years of anger, adopts a baby bird, and ends up becoming one of the world's foremost bird experts, all done while serving his life sentence in Leavenworth Prison) starring Burt Lancaster (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Robert Franklin Stroud), Karl Malden, Thelma Ritter (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Neville Brand, Edmond O'Brien ("as Tom Gaddis"), Betty Field, and Telly Savalas (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; billed as "Tony Savalas"). Note that if you only knew of Robert Stroud from this movie, you would think him a pretty saintly man who made a few youthful mistakes and suffered the rest of his life because of a system that refused to forgive him. But actually, that is a fiction that was created for the film. If you are interested in knowing more, you can easily look up his real life story, which is far more complicated and depressing than how it was presented in the movie. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this one-sheet is correctly printed in the credits with "Telly Savalas" (see below for why this is unusual). We are also selling a linenbacked one-sheet that has "Tony Savalas" printed on it. Also note that virtually every one-sheet poster we have had from this classic title (except for two previous ones) has either had a snipe over Telly Savalas' name, or the snipe had been there but had been removed (Savalas was incorrectly billed as "Tony Savalas")! But this poster has clearly never had a snipe in that area, and Savalas' first name is correctly spelled. Therefore, it seems that the only possible answer is that the typo was caught during the print run, and they printed up additional posters with his name correctly on them (but I am very surprised that I have only twice before seen this poster with his name correctly spelled)! Condition: very good to fine. The poster had tiny paper loss on the crossfolds, pinholes in the corners, and minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
