An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Style A Italian One-Panel (known in Italy as a "2 Fogli") Movie Poster (1p; measures 39" x 55" [99 x 140 cm]) (Learn More) Paisa (released in the U.S. in 1948 as "Paisan"), the classic 1946 Roberto Rossellini Italian World War II (WWII) neo-realist military romantic melodrama ("The lives and loves of GI's in Italy"; "English dialogue made in Rome"; set in the waning days of World War II, about the U.S. soldiers in Italy, and their interactions with the local citizens, as presented in six different segments; because director Rossellini wanted the movie to be as realistic as possible, he mostly cast non-actors in all of the main roles) starring Camela Sazio, Robert Van Loon, Dots Johnson, Alfonsino Pasca (billed as "Alfonsino"), Gar Moore, Maria Michi, Harriet Medin (billed as "Harriet White"), Renzo Avanzo, William Tubbs (billed as "Bill Tubbs"), Dale Edmonds, and Cigolani. Note that Dots Johnson was born Hylan Johnson and was a black African American actor who, along with most of the other actors in this movie, made his acting debut here. However, many of the other actors never appeared in other movies, but Johnson went on to appear in several notable movies including No Way Out and The Joe Louis Story. Also note that Italy had been devastated in World War II, and it was a major accomplishment for this movie to be filmed right after the war. It was released in September of 1946 at the Venice Film Festival, and then released throughout Italy in December of 1946. It did not open in France until September of 1947, and in the U.S. until March of 1948, with most other major countries having their first releases over the next two years. First release movie posters from this movie from ANY country are incredibly scarce. First release movie posters from Italy are virtually unknown! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Antonio Mancinelli Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this style A Italian one-panel (in only "good" condition), which is a "country of origin" poster for this Italian movie, and that was 7 years ago, when it sold for $851! We also auctioned one example of the style B one-panel and we sold a mostly text poster, and those three are the only first release Italian posters we sold prior to this one. This is an extremely rare Italian poster from during World War II! Virtually no Italian posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II (mostly only some heavy stock lobby cards, and even those are rare). Apparently there were many paper shortages in Italy during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all posters from before World War II, and also from during the war, and the first few years afterwards! Condition: good to very good. The poster was folded several extra times, no doubt so it could be sent in a small packet (perhaps this was when it was traveling from theater to theater). There are many pinholes around the edges. There are tears and small paper loss in the part of the fold between the "P" and "a" in the title, with a few small tears in the "P". There are small tears and tiny paper loss on small parts of some folds, and some creases scattered throughout the poster. There is a circular foreign stamp in the bottom, entirely in the blank area. The paper is fortunately not very fragile at all, and after a relatively simple linenbacking, this incredibly rare poster will display wonderfully! Learn More about condition grades
