An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian Two-Panel (known in Italy as a "4 Fogli") Movie Poster (2p; measures 55" x 78" [140 x 198 cm]) (Learn More) La Dolce Vita (sometimes referred to as "Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita"; literally translates to "The Sweet Life"), the classic 1960 (released in the U.S. in 1961) Federico Fellini (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) French/Italian romantic melodrama ("Uncut uncensored now for all to see... the nights, the drunken revels, the sin and the sinners, the perverted decadence of the jet set rich who live what they call 'the sweet life'"; "The most talked about - the most shocked about film of our years"; about a successful Italian movie critic who is dissatisfied with the emptiness of his life, even though he is surrounded by rich and famous people and has a beautiful girlfriend, and he yearns to understand why) starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimee, Yvonne Furneaux, Magali Noel, Lex Barker, Jacques Sernas, Alain Cuny, Annibale Ninchi, Walter Santesso, Nadia Gray, and Franca Pasut. Note that Astor Pictures, which had been known for mostly re-releasing classic U.S. movies in the 1940s and 1950s, acquired the rights for the first American release of this classic Italian movie, which they released on April 19, 1961. Artist: Giorgio Olivetti Important Added Info: Note that this "country of origin" poster for this partially Italian movie is one of the incredibly rare cases where a wonderful movie has a wonderful poster! This exact poster (the Italian two-panel) has a far superior image to that of the Italian one-panel or any of the other posters for this movie we have seen from Italy or any other country. We first auctioned an example of this poster at our second major auction in 1991, when it auctioned for $7,700, which seemed like a high price back at that time 28 years ago, when few posters auctioned for that much. Five years ago, we auctioned a nice condition example of this poster, and it sold for $34,000. Now we have this poster for the third time, and while many of the examples of this poster we have seen come up for auction at other auction houses have had condition or fading issues, the example we are currently auctioning is a really nice one (see below), and that is extremely important with this poster, because defects on the folds in the upper part of the poster will be very noticeable, and if the poster fades at all, that, too, is very noticeable (and our digital image does not do full justice to the color of this poster, because it is a blue that does not photograph well, and as nice as it looks online, I guarantee you it looks even better in person!). Finally, note that this movie opened in 1960. Apparently, when the poster was first printed, some examples were printed that had a 1959 copyright date, but they are otherwise identical to the posters with the 1960 copyright date. There are a few of those posters with the "1959" on them in existence, but the movie never played in 1959, and there is no other difference in the poster. The poster offered here has the 1960 copyright date, which is the year the movie premiered (and it is also the date that was on the two previous examples we auctioned). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster had the most minor of fold and border wear, with a few faint scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The colors on the poster are bright (especially important on this poster). The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
