An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 9 1/2" x 11 3/4" [24 x 30 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Lon Chaney, Sr. was perhaps the greatest star of the 1920s. Surprisingly, he had minor roles for many years before becoming a major star in the late 1910s, when he became Universal's leading actor. His greatest roles were in silent horror classics. Some of his movies include: He Who Gets Slapped, Laugh Clown Laugh, The Unknown, Tell It to the Marines, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, London After Midnight, The Phantom of the Opera, and the Penalty. He only made one sound movie, The Unholy Three, which was a remake of his own silent version, and then sadly, he passed away in 1930 at the age of 47 from throat cancer (apparently just before he could play the starring role in "Dracula"!) Important Added Info: What a wonderful still this is! It was distributed to the media on September 4, 1930, nine days after Lon Chaney Sr. passed away, and it has a wonderful montage of 15 of his "thousand faces" rising in a billow of smoke from his famed makeup box! We have never seen this image before, although it may well have been used in one or more books or magazines, and it surely appeared in newspapers in 1930. Also note that this still has been trimmed and it now measures 9 1/2" x 11 3/4" [24 x 30 cm]. Also note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock. Condition: good. The still likely originally measured 11" x 14", but the newspaper that used this trimmed it to 9 1/2" x 11 3/4" (no doubt because they wanted that proportion of image for the story they were running). Somebody afterwards took the piece of Chaney's face from the top left, which had been trimmed off, and re-attached it with tape from the back (they did so quickly, and they were slightly off in the alignment, but it could be easily removed and then correctly re-attached. There are also some smudges and faint stains in the white background areas. Obviously, the trimming and re-attached piece is a significant defect, but it is a really wonderful image, and we leave it to the bidders to decide how significant it is.
