A Vintage English Hardcover Book (measures 4 1/4" x 6 3/4" [11 x 17 cm]; 378 pages) (Learn More) The Manxman, the 1929 Alfred Hitchcock English silent romantic love triangle melodrama ("A screen adaptation of Sir Hall Caine's famous novel"; set on the Isle of Man, where some of the filming was done, about two men who grew up like brothers, but one becomes a fisherman and the other becomes a lawyer, and then the fisherman falls in love a young woman, and she agrees to marry him, and when he goes off on a long fishing trip, he asks his best friend to take care of her, not realizing he also loves her; the fisherman is thought to have been killed, and the lawyer does not have to hide his love for the girl, but then they learn that the fisherman is still alive!) starring Carl Brisson, Malcolm Keen, Anny Ondra, Randle Ayrton, and Clare Greet (billed as "Claire Greet"). Note that this was Alfred Hitchcock's final silent movie. There are not many intertitles, as Hitchcock preferred to let the viewer see what was happening rather than being told. There is a key moment in the film when the girl separately tells each of the two men that she is going to have a baby, and in both cases there is no intertitle (the viewer has to either read her lips, or deduce what was said by the man's reaction!). Important Added Info: Note that we previously auctioned one example of this book, and that example did not have its dust jacket like this one does, and it sold for $258! This example DOES have its dust jacket, and while it has some tears and tiny paper loss around the edges, it has survived pretty well. Note that this is the Readers Library Publishing Company photoplay edition in its original dust jacket (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: this company (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with some studios to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book. Condition: good to very good. There are some tears and tiny paper loss around the edges of the jacket, more so on the spine. The interior pages have darkened around the edges (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
