A 1947 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Frankenstein, the classic 1931 James Whale Universal monster horror thriller ("The monster that terrorized the world!"; "The Man Who Made a Monster"; "Warning! The monster is loose!"; "Based upon the Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Story"; "Adapted by John L. Balderston from the play by Peggy Webling"; the first of the Universal "Frankenstein" movies, and regarded as one of the finer movies of any genre, in large part due to the marvelous acting of Boris Karloff, and the marvelous direction of James Whale!) starring Colin Clive (as Dr. Herbert V. Frankenstein), Boris Karloff (as the Frankenstein monster), Edward Van Sloan, Fredric Kerr, Mae Clarke, Dwight Frye (extremely memorable as Fritz), and John Boles NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only ever auctioned this great poster twice before, but it was the exact same poster, because the person who bought it from us in July of 2009 (for $13,809), re-consigned it to us in November of 2011, when it sold for $15,500. So this is only the second example of this poster we have auctioned. Note that many people consider the regular 1931 one-sheet from "Frankenstein" to be somewhat disappointing, because the image of the monster is pretty small. In addition, that poster sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars, putting it out of reach for all but the wealthiest of collectors. But this 1947 re-release has a wonderful large close up image of Karloff as the monster, similar to that of the 1931 teaser one-sheet (and yet it is different from the teaser, in that it has added scenes at the bottom). It will likely be the centerpiece of the collection of the person who purchases it! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had paper loss at the bottom two crossfolds, with small paper loss at the top crossfold. It had small tears, creases, and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the folds, and some of those areas once had tape on the back. Most of the top blank border was trimmed off, and there were pinholes, tears, and some tape stains around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed many years ago with no excess linen. Over the years, the restoration paint on the folds has become more noticeable (see our image), so you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. However, if you are the sort of person who does not mind that you can tell that a poster is nearly 75 years old and was used in a theater, then you will likely be happy to display this poster! If you want your posters to look "perfect", then you would surely want to have this poster re-backed (which certainly could be done). Please look closely at our super-sized image and read what is written above before bidding on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
