An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

Merry-Go-Round, the 1922 Rupert Julian & Erich von Stroheim silent romantic love triangle melodrama ("Universal Super-Jewel, The Mad Whirl of Life Love and Luxury"; "You'll be surprised!") starring Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry, Cesare Gravina, George Hackathorne, Edith Yorke, George Seigmann, Dale Fuller, Dorothy Wallace, Spottswoode Aifken, Al Edmundson, Maude George, Charles L. King, Fenwick Oliver, Sidney Bracy, Jane Sherman and Helen Broneau. Note that Erich von Stroheim was the actual director of this movie. But as he was finishing it, producer Irving Thalberg fired him, and called in Rupert Julian to finish the movie, and, no doubt to spite von Stroheim, only Julian was billed as the director of the movie. But it is completely a von Stroheim movie, and quite an interesting one! It is interesting to note that soon after this, Irving Thalberg was himself fired by Carl Laemmle (reportedly because Thalberg dumped Laemmle's daughter!), and he went to work for Louis B. Mayer, later rising to be the head of MGM studios!

Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this card, and that was 19 years ago! Also note that for this movie, Universal created two entirely different 8 card lobby card sets (something they did with their top productions in the 1920s). On one set, all of the cards are printed on a special gold colored paper stock (it is gold colored on the front, but is the regular paper color on the back). This card, which is from the other set, is printed on more traditional lobby card paper. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

Condition: good. The entire card has darkened somewhat. It has tack holes, smudges, and small stains around the edges. There are a few tiny stains scattered in the image. This is the sort of card that responds really well to professional restoration. It is likely that much or all of the smudges and stains can be removed through chemical means, and of course, most of the pinholes are in the blank borders, and after proper restoration, the card will display well. Please look closely at our images of the front and back of this card before bidding. Note that this card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back!
