An Original Vintage Special Poster(measures 15 1/4" x 18 1/4" [39 x 46 cm]) (Learn More)

Our Great Authors, the 1865 poster ("A literary party at the home of Washington Irving") featuring a photo of art of several American authors sitting in the home of Washington Irving, including: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., James Fenimore Cooper, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and more. Note that steamboats on the Hudson River can be seen in the window on the right! We searched the Internet, and we found an example of this poster in a museum collection, but nowhere else. It was created by gluing a 11 1/2" x 17" photo by Duchochois to a stiff board which has information printed at the bottom of it. It was consigned to us from an archive that has consigned other 1800s posters to us, and we think it is from when the poster was first created in 1865, and not any sort of later reproduction. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that some early owner of this poster wrote the names of many of the people pictured around the edges of the photo on the front of the poster. These are NOT signatures (we wish they were!). Someone else, at a later date, taped a piece of paper to the back of the poster that gives a "key" to the people on the front, writing their names in the positions where they are on the front (see our images of the front and back). Also note that this poster measures 15 1/4" x 18 1/4" [39 x 46 cm], and that it was created on a heavy board, so it will need to be sent in a large flat package that measures approximately 17" x 21".

Condition: good. The names of the people shown are written around the edges of the photo on the front (see above). There are water stains scattered across the bottom of the poster and many smudges and small stains around the edges. Obviously, this poster can be restored, or it can be displayed as is, but bear in mind its defects before bidding on it.
