As all Rome cheers, 'Ben-Hur' moves his team to the starting line."; "A story of the people and times of The Christ"; "Based on the classic novel by General Lew Wallace"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; winner of 11 Academy Awards, which was the record won by a single movie at that time) starring Charlton Heston (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Judah Ben-Hur), Jack Hawkins (as Quintus Arrius), Haya Harareet (as Esther), Stephen Boyd (as Messala), Hugh Griffith (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as Sheik Ilderim), Martha Scott (as Miriam), Cathy O'Donnell (as Tirzah), Sam Jaffe (as Simonides), Frank Thring (as Pontius Pilate), and Claude Heater (as Jesus, but his face is never shown throughout the movie, although you see parts of his body). Note that this classic novel was written in 1880, and there were numerous stage versions and an early silent version in 1907, but the definitive silent version was made in 1925 by Fred Niblo with Ramon Novarro in the leading role, and then this classic sound version. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this toga was worn by the actor Frank Thring, who played Pontius Pilate in this classic movie. It has a tag from B.J. Simmons & Co. Ltd that has "PONTIUS PILATE" written at the top of the tag, and it is sewn to the top of the inside of the toga (and it has a second tag that is sewn in to the inside of one of the corners of the toga; see our images). It comes with a "letter of authenticity" from Michael Siewert, who purchased this toga at a Christie's auction in May 2007. It was in a group lot of articles of clothing and costumes, and they were not well identified at that auction. Mr. Siewert believes that the costumes came from the estate of Ken Schultz, who was a well known collector of costumes and memorabilia who had passed away the year before, which accounts for why this item was in a group lot and not well identified. Mr. Siewert is a well known Judy Garland collector/historian, and he sold this toga to our consignor through an eBay auction in November of 2007, and our consignor paid $4,048 for it at that auction, and we are now auctioning it for the estate of our consignor, who passed away a year ago. The toga comes with not only the letter of authenticity, but printouts of the actual eBay auction, plus printouts of the correspondence between our consignor and Mr. Siewert. In 2020, we auctioned an unknown Roman soldier's costume from this movie, and it sold for $701. Certainly, this toga, which was worn by one of the lead actors in this movie, is FAR more significant, and will be a great addition to the winning bidder's collection! Condition: very good.
