An Original Vintage Theatrical French Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 8 3/4" x 12 1/2" [22 x 32 cm]; 8 pages) (Learn More) Underworld, the 1927 Josef von Sternberg silent romantic love triangle organized crime film noir ("Story by Ben Hecht"; about the leader of the mob in a big city who adopts a down and out educated man, and that man becomes his sidekick and helps him greatly; but the mob leader's girlfriend shows an interest in the sidekick, and when the mob leader is arrested for killing another man, he thinks his sidekick has double-crossed him with his girlfriend, and he escapes from jail and wounds his sidekick, but realizes his mistake and surrenders to the police and is taken to be hung) starring Clive Brook, Evelyn Brent, George Bancroft, Larry Semon, Fred Kohler and Helen Lynch. Note that the movie was initially directed by Arthur Rosson, but he was fired early in filming and replaced by Josef von Sternberg, who also helped rewrite the screenplay, which was based on a story by Ben Hecht, and Howard Hawks also contributed to the screenplay. The movie was predicted to be a flop, and Paramount released it in a single New York theater, intending to stop showing it after that (and Ben Hecht demanded his name be taken off the credits). But the public loved the movie, and it became a giant hit, and Hecht won an Academy Award! Finally, note that the movie Scarface in 1932 borrowed some of the "boss/sidekick/girlfriend" aspect of this movie, as well as the final shootout, and so did Johnny Eager in 1942.
