A Set of 32 Original 1947 Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Stills (Learn More)

La Belle et la Bete (released in the U.S. in 1947 as "The Beauty and the Beast"), the classic 1946 Jean Cocteau French romantic fantasy adventure (based on the classic fairy tale by Madame Leprince de Beaumont; about a handsome prince who has a spell put on him that turns him into a beast, and he can't change back unless a beautiful woman loves him as he is!) starring Jean Marais (in a dual role as both la Bete and the Prince), Josette Day (in the title role as Belle), Mila Parely, Nane Germon, Michael Auclair, and Marcel Andre. Note that this movie had wonderful special effects (both by 1946 standards, and even by present day standards) and that it is one of the best loved fantasy movies of all time. In 1991, Walt Disney turned this into an animated feature length musical, and it has since been turned into a Broadway show and a live action movie, but this version still remains the best of all!

Important Added Info: Note that this classic movie opened in France in September of 1946 at the Cannes Film Festival, and had its regular French opening the following month. On November 18, 1947, the movie opened in New York in a special preview performance ("sponsored by the Cultural Division of the French Embassy"). This special premiere was attended by all of the top French officials in the U.S. including the French ambassador, as well as such celebrities as Marlene Dietrich, John D. and Nelson Rockefeller, Henry Luce, Madeleine Carroll, and others. For that release, a special press release was created, which was sent to publicity outlets along with 32 8" x 10" photos from the movie. They were sent five days before the special premiere, and written on the envelope was "Hold til release of film"! Remarkably, a set of these 32 photos has survived and is being auctioned here. Every single one of the photos has a paper snipe glued to the back, and the snipes are identical, except that someone put a check mark next to the actor(s) who are pictured on the front of that still (we have pictured one of the snipes, but remember that all of the photos have them). The snipes say that they are from Irving Drutman, who worked for Lopert Films, who released the movie (with English subtitles) to the general public around one month after the special premiere. We have never seen or heard of this remarkable set of photos before. The high bidder will receive all 32 sniped photos (which include many wonderful images from the film), plus the original press release, plus the original envelope they were sent in!

Condition: very good to fine. The photos are generally in really nice condition. The press release is tri-folded and the envelope has tears and some paper loss around the edges. I certainly can imagine the new owner of these selling each of these stills individually for lots of money, but a part of me very much hopes that they will be kept together, because they are SO remarkable!
