An Original Vintage Theatrical Color 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Port of Seven Seas, the 1938 James Whale romantic love triangle melodrama ("It's More Exciting than 'Bad Man of Brimstone'!"; "From the play 'Fanny' by Marcel Pagnol"; "Screen Play by Preston Sturges"; "Bad man of brimstone's new thriller!"; NOBODY remembers this first American version of Pagnol's classic tragic love story, but it combined the talents of Pagnol with Preston Sturges and James Whale!) starring Wallace Beery, Frank Morgan, Maureen O'Sullivan (as Madelon), John Beal, and Jessie Ralph. Note that in the original French play, the female lead was named "Fanny". Apparently, MGM refused to use that as a title, likely afraid that audiences would titter at the word "Fanny", so they changed the character's name to "Madelon", and that was intended to be the name of the movie, but at the last minute, it was changed to "Port of Seven Seas", no doubt because no one knew what "Madelon" meant.
