An Original 1934 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 30 1/2" [60 x 77 cm]) (Learn More) Flying Down to Rio, the classic 1933 Thornton Freeland South America Rio De Janeiro Brazil airplane aviation pilot romantic love triangle musical ("Musical Romance Staged in the Clouds..."; "Too big for the world... So they staged it in the clouds... Too beautiful for words... So they set it to music!"; "Come, take a joy ride through the sky!"; "Romance that soars on the wings of song") starring Dolores Del Rio, Gene Raymond, Paul Roulien, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, and Blanche Friderici. Note that this was the first of the ten movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made together, which explains why they were fourth and fifth billed, and not pictured on any poster art! Also note that this movie was made at a time when Hollywood had a "love affair" with South America in general, and Brazil (and Rio de Janeiro). Paul Roulien was a Brazilian singer who came to Hollywood in 1931, and he sang in several movies. In this movie, he was part of a romantic love triangle with Dolores Del Rio and Gene Raymond, and it was his best role. In 1934, he returned to Brazil and quit acting in 1938. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this pre-war Belgian poster contains images of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, while none of the first release U.S. posters did. The movie was first released in France and most European countries in 1934, and we think it is likely it was released in Belgium at that time, and that this poster would have been printed in that year (note that although Astaire & Rogers are pictured, they received billing below not only Del Rio and Raymond, but also Paul Roulien). Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 23 3/4" x 30 1/2" [60 x 77 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had a small blank top area that was partially trimmed off. It was folded like a U.S. one-sheet, and it had separation and tiny tears scattered down the vertical foldline, with tiny paper loss at the crossfolds, and a much lesser amount of wear on the horizontal folds, and minor border wear. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that the poster once had a sticker in the bottom right corner of the excess linen only, and it was removed, but it left slight stains in that area (they do not affect the poster at all).
