eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 5h0058 THING British quad R1960s From Another World, Howard Hawks' classic horror, ultra rare! Date Sold 8/9/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Undated (probably 1964 or 1965 - see below) Re-Release Theatrical Folded British Quad Movie Poster (BQ; Quad Crown; measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World!, the classic 1951 Christian Nyby science fiction (sci-fi) monster horror thriller ("The Thing from another world!"; "How did it get here?"; "Natural or Supernatural?"; "Howard Hawks' Astounding Movie"; "Look out... it's The Thing from another world!"; produced by Howard Hawks; based on the story by John W. Campbell, best known for being the editor of Astounding Science Fiction!) starring Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan, Robert Cornthwaite, Dewey Martin, Paul Frees, John Dierkes, Eduard Franz, James Arness (in the title role as The Thing From Another World!), William Self, and Billy Curtis (as the miniature "Thing" in the final sequence when the monster appears to shrink). Note that this movie had a very unusual poster campaign, where the letters of the title were made to look like body parts ("blood and guts"!), with wires coming off of the letters. Almost all the posters had this basic design. The pressbook calls all of them "teaser" posters and says "This display material was designed for an advance teaser campaign, as well as for general use". So obviously, they intentionally wanted to have the posters not reveal much about the movie, as a way to get people interested and get them into the theater. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have only auctioned one in all our years of auctioning and that was in 2011 (and it sold for $590!). Note also that the leading British quad experts have examined this poster (and the printer information at the bottom) and they are able to very closely pinpoint this re-release to being almost certainly from 1964 or 1965. Note finally that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good to very good. The poster was folded slightly unevenly along the upper and lower horizontal folds and it has some light creases and scuffs along portions of the folds, and a few tiny areas of paper loss in the right center horizontal fold (affecting a small portion of the "H" in "THING"). There are a few tears of varying lengths at lower left and in portions of the lower vertical foldline and there are some creases and tiny tears in the lower edge. There are a few tiny pinholes in around the edges (mostly only affecting only blank white paper, but there is a slightly enlarged one near the rating.) It is otherwise in pretty nice condition and certainly many collectors would be happy to display the rare British Quad as is, but after a relatively simple linenbacking the poster would look great!
