An Original Vintage Unfolded Stage Play Poster (measures 21 1/4" x 27 3/4" [54 x 70 cm]) (Learn More) The Prisoner of Zenda, the 1895 stage play production ("Magnificent scenic production"; "Now for the king!"; "Flavia greets you"; "Where is He?"; "I know your secret"; "By special arrangement with Mr. Daniel Frohman"; "Dramatized from Anthony Hope's fascinating romance"; about a king who is about to have his coronation, and his evil brother has him drugged and kidnapped so that he can become king instead, but the future king's friends find an exact lookalike who takes his place, and he becomes the new king, and even wins the love of the real king's girlfriend, but he ultimately gives it all up when he gets a chance to rescue the real king). Note that this book was a massive success after it was written by Anthony Hope in 1894. The following year, Daniel Frohman, a major producer of plays, hired noted actor James K. Hackett to play both lead roles. It was another huge success. In 1913, when Frohman was forming Famous Players Film Company with Adolph Zukor, he thought to have their very first film be The Prisoner of Zenda, and he was able to lure James K. Hackett out of retirement to recreate his great success on film. The movie was very successful and helped Famous Players become very successful and led to the establishment of Paramount Pictures the following year! If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that in June of 2016, we auctioned two styles of posters for this play, and those auctioned for $282 and $209. Now we are offering two completely different styles, from the same collection as the other two! This one shows the injured real king with a sword seeking vengeance! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 21 1/4" x 27 3/4" [54 x 70 cm]. Note that this is one of 78 very rare posters (including 53 WWI and WWII posters and 18 stage play posters) that mostly date from 1888 to 1945. These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these 78 posters (which even includes a remarkable 1873 P.T. Barnum poster from his "Traveling World's Fair")! Note that in June of 2016, we auctioned around 100 posters that were from this same archive. The 78 posters we are currently auctioning represent most of the remaining posters from this remarkable find (we certainly wish there were lots more, but unfortunately there are not, so this is likely your last opportunity to acquire these great rarities!). Condition: good. The poster was never folded. Most of its right blank border and part of the bottom blank border were trimmed off. It had some light creases scattered throughout. Someone put paper tape on the back of the borders. Someone put paper tape on the back of the borders and on the back of the center of the poster, for reinforcement. The poster can be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or it certainly can be linenbacked and completely restored. Learn More about condition grades
