Weary River, the 1929 Frank Lloyd (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) prison crime rehabilitation music songwriting melodrama ("Richard Barthelmess puts his soul to music in Weary River"; it seems like an early gangster movie, but with a really unusual twist; Barthelmess is a gangster and Compson is his girl, and he goes to prison, and while there, he discovers a talent for songwriting, and when he is released, he writes a hit song, and his girlfriend stays away from him for fear of causing him to relapse into crime, but when he might make a terrible decision, she returns and steers him straight; this may sound very far fetched, but it was based on a real life story!) starring Richard Barthelmess, Betty Compson, William Holden (no, not THAT William Holden, but another actor of the same name who made 20 movies between 1920 and 1931, and he died the next year, which was 7 years before the more famous William Holden made his first movie!), Louis Natheaux, George E. Stone, Ray Turner, Gladden James, Bob Kortman, and Blue Washington
