eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 5j472 GUYS & DOLLS pressbook '55 Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra & Blaine arm-in-arm! Date Sold 8/26/2010Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 15" x 20" [38 x 51 cm]; * pages). Also included is an ad supplement that has 2 pages and a herald that has 4 pages (Learn More) Guys and Dolls, the 1955 Joseph L. Mankiewicz New York City romantic gambling Broadway dance musical ("It's a living breathing doll of a musical!"; "Samuel Goldwyn presents America's Own Musical!"; based on the play by Abe Burrows & Jo Swerling; about a professional gambler who bets an operator of an illegal craps game that he can take a beautiful Salvation Army worker to Cuba with him for dinner!) starring Marlon Brando (as Sky Masterson), Jean Simmons (as Sister Sarah Brown), Frank Sinatra (as Nathan Detroit), Vivian Blaine (as Miss Adelaide), Robert Keith (as Lt. Brannigan), Stubby Kaye (as Nicely-Nicely Johnson), B.S. Pully (as Big Jule), Johnny Silver (as Benny Southstreet), Sheldon Leonard (as Harry the Horse), The Goldwyn Girls, and Larri Thomas (as the sexy Cuban dancer who flirts with Brando in Cuba, and gets in a fight with Simmons!). Note that Sam Levene was the original Nathan Detroit in the first stage version of "Guys and Dolls", but he was replaced for the movie by Frank Sinatra, because producer Sam Goldwyn did not consider Levene a big enough name, and Goldwyn also refused to let Sinatra play Sky Masterson, who would have been wonderful, and instead Goldwyn cast Marlon Brando (which led to much friction between Brando and Sinatra)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: This auction includes a large portfolio that contains 5 different booklets, "Advertising", "Publicity", "Exploitation"; "Accessories", and "Highlights". The books are filled with pictures of stars, news articles, and ideas on how to promote the film! Note that when studios would prepare pressbooks they would often include a sample of the herald. Most often, the herald is no longer still with the pressbook. Sometimes, the herald by itself will sell for almost as much as the rest of the entire pressbook! This pressbook contains the original herald. Also note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of the pressbook, plus an image of a two-page spread from inside of the pressbook (we do NOT picture any supplements or heralds, if there are any included with this pressbook), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Finally, note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: very good, NO CUTS. There are some small tears and stains around the edges of the portfolio cover. The contents of the portfolio were well protected and are in pretty nice condition!
