A 1945 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Folded French "Affiche" Movie Poster (23x32; measures 23 1/4" x 31 1/4" [59 x 79 cm]) (Learn More)

La Grande Illusion (released in the U.S. in 1938 as "Grand Illusion"), the classic 1937 Jean Renoir French France Germany World War I (WWI) anti-war military prisoner of war (POW) melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; many people rightfully consider this movie to be one of the handful of absolute finest movies ever made!) starring Jean Gabin, Dita Parlo, Pierre Fresnay, Erich von Stroheim, Julien Carette (billed as "Carette"), Gaston Modot (billed as "Modot"), Georges Peclet (billed as "Peclet"), Marcel Dalio (billed as "Dalio"), and Jean Daste (billed as "Daste"). Note that this is also the rare case of a great movie that was recognized as being truly great right after it was made. It was the first foreign film ever to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, and it certainly deserved to win!

Artist: Bernard Lancy
Important Added Info: Note that this poster (which is a "country of origin" poster) is one of the rare cases where a re-release can be more desirable than the first release poster. The original 1937 French poster has a totally nice image, but collectors really cherish this wonderful Bernard Lancy surreal design, and many collectors consider it THE poster to have from this classic movie! Note that we auctioned a linenbacked example of this poster in December of 2013, and it auctioned for $4,410! Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Condition: very good. The poster has slightly darkened on the foldlines and around the edges. It has a small tear in the lower left border and a black scuff mark in the top right corner (see our image). It has the tiniest of paper loss at the crossfold, and the poster is slightly fragile. After a simple linenbacking, this marvelous poster will look incredible!
