A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 7 1/2" x 9 3/4" [19 x 25 cm]; 208 pages) (Learn More) The Wizard of Oz, the classic 1939 Victor Fleming family magical fantasy adventure musical ("MGM's miracle musical show of shows!"; "It's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Technicolor triumph!"; "Magnificent in its brilliant Technicolor splendor!"; "At Last It's Here Biggest Sensation Since "Snow White"!"; "The mighty miracle show that is the talk of America!"; "Amazing sights to see! The Tornado, Munchkinland, Horse of a Different Color, Startling Balloon Ascent, The Flying Monkeys, The Tree That Throws Apples"; "Gaiety! Glory! Glamour!"; based on the classic book of the same name by L. Frank Baum; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Judy Garland (as Dorothy), Frank Morgan (in the title role as The Wizard of Oz!), Ray Bolger (as The Scarecrow), Bert Lahr (as The Cowardly Lion), Jack Haley (as The Tin Man), Billie Burke (as Glinda, the Good Witch), Margaret Hamilton (as the Wicked Witch), Charley Grapewin, "The Munchkins", and Toto too! Note that MGM was worried about how well this movie would do at the box office, and they did something we don't remember seeing on any other major movie advertising! One of the taglines says "Biggest sensation since Snow White", which means MGM was advertising a Walt Disney movie, but that shows just how worried they were! Of course, they needn't have worried, because this was a timeless classic that has only improved with age. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is the Bobbs-Merrill Company 1939 photoplay edition of this novel in its original dust jacket, which we have never auctioned before (either with or without its dust jacket). Bobbs-Merrill made a deal with MGM in 1939 to publish this oversized "movie edition" hardcover novel of the just-released The Wizard of Oz movie. To save money, they republished the original novel "The New Wizard of Oz" with the illustrations by W.W. Denslow, but they added a dust jacket on the book that showed great new art of the stars of the 1939 movie, and the back of the dust jacket has photos of the five top stars with taglines about the movie (and "READ THE BOOK AND SEE THE MOVIE" at the bottom), and they also added a photo montage on the inside front and back covers with images from the 1939 movie (the photos on the first and last pages plus the inside covers are referred to as "endpaper"). They added "The only edition containing the complete original text on which the famous Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie is based". Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book. Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 30 movie edition books (and a few closely related items) that were consigned to us from a man who has collected such books for over half a century! Included are some of the most rare and desirable of these books, and all have the original dust jackets (many times such books lost their dust jackets over the years and they are far more rare with the dust jacket). This is a very rare opportunity to obtain one or more of these books, most of which we have either never auctioned before or only auctioned once before! Note: We have 17 images of this book, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 17 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 7. Condition: very good to fine. The dust jacket has slight wear at the top and bottom, but is otherwise in nice condition, as is the book itself (see our many images). Learn More about condition grades
