An Original 1924 (from the first release of this movie in England) Vintage Theatrical English Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 10" x 12" [25 x 30 cm]; 16 pages) (Learn More) Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari (released in the U.S. in 1921 and in England in 1924 as "The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari"), the 1920 Robert Wiene German expressionism silent horror thriller ("A thrilling fantastic photo-play"; about a man who sleepwalks in a disturbing world and there is a mysterious Dr. Caligari who seems to be his arch enemy!) starring Werner Krauss (in the title role as Doctor Caligari), Conrad Veidt (as Cesare, the somnambulist), Friedrich Feher, Lil Dagover, and Hans Heinrich von Twardowski. Note that this movie is considered by many to be the first major horror movie ever. Much of the movie takes place within the dreams of the sleepwalker, and the sets are distorted to reflect his distorted mind (they were made of paper and the shadows were painted on to the paper!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1920 German movie paper from this classic movie is beyond rare and mostly in museums. The movie paper from the 1921 first U.S. release is also extremely rare. The pressbook offered here is from the 1924 first English release of this movie (we previously auctioned a 1921 U.S. pressbook, but that had a different cover, and likely had different interior contents). This pressbook is MAGNIFICENT. It has an expressionist cover that shows a silhouette of Caligari opening a "door", and the pressbook cover is divided in the middle of that "door", and behind it stands Conrad Veidt within his box! That is only the beginning of the wonderful contents of this pressbook. It has images of the six 12x18 large stills, plus images of the twelve 8x10 stills. It also has much information on the movie, and there are also images of both glass slides and the window card. But the highlight of this great pressbook is the 4-page full-color section at the center of the pressbook, which shows the 12-sheet, the 48-sheet, and the two 6-sheets (all in full-color). Remember that those sizes are the same as the U.S. 6-sheet, 24-sheet, and 3-sheet. There are also newspaper ads and written information, plus an image of one of the 24x30 gold framed enlargements you could order. Stapled into the back page of the pressbook is an order form for all of the above, plus pages on newsprint which give suggested newspaper stories, and even musical suggestions to be played throughout the movie. This surely is one of the best pressbooks we have ever seen, and it is the only example that we have ever auctioned! Note that we have pictured the front cover and five interior 2-page spreads from this program. You can use these images to determine the exact condition of it from our super-sized image, but realize that there are some other pages you are not seeing. Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The outer covers of the pressbook are printed on a heavier paper stock, and they are both partially separated at the spine. There are stains and smudges in the top left corner of the cover and in the background areas, with a scuff mark and other scuffs in the silhouette. There are stains and smudges on the back cover in the blank areas. The interior pages are in pretty nice condition. The pressbook must be handled carefully because of the separation in the covers, but it has survived pretty well, especially considering its age. Learn More about condition grades
