Note that director Brian De Palma had made a series of short movies and one short feature prior to this movie, but it was this movie that gave him major acclaim and led to his making far more important movies (the movie had a very limited release in New York City in December 1968, but all of the printed posters we have seen have a 1969 copyright date and NSS number)!
