An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French "Affiche" Movie Poster (23x32; measures 23 3/4" x 31 3/4" [60 x 81 cm]) (Learn More)

Austerlitz (released in the U.S. as "The Battle of Austerlitz"), the 1960 Abel Gance French/Italian/Yugoslavian/Liechtensteiner France historical military war melodrama ("The man... the day... the explosion the world will never forget!") starring Claudia Cardinale, Vittorio De Sica, Jack Palance, Orson Welles, and Pierre Mondy (as Napoleon Bonaparte). Note that this movie has an interesting origin! In 1927, Abel Gance made his masterpiece, "Napoleon", and it was intended to be the first part of a six film series about Napoleon's life. But the movie was a disaster financially, and Gance was ruined, and he sold his story for the sixth part to director Lupu Pick, who made a German adaptation of it (covering Napoleon's last days), called "Napoleon at St. Helena". In the 1950s, Gance was trying to resume his career, and he was able to get the financing for this movie, which was the third of his original six movie series, covering the battle of Austerlitz!

Artist: d'apres Jean Mascii
Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this partially French movie! Note that the poster is signed "d'apres Jean Mascii", which means that the unknown French artist created the poster in the style of the original French poster by Jean Mascii, but that Mascii did not actually do this art.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small paper loss at the crossfold and some small tears scattered in the vertical foldline, with a few tiny bits of paper loss. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and a talented restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster).
