An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 38 1/2" [70 x 98 cm]) (Learn More) U.S. Marines: Active Service on Land and Sea, the circa 1916 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster ("Enlist at...") encouraging men to join the United States Marine Corps (USMC), and featuring Sidney Reisenberg art of a soldier holding a rifle while on patrol with a battleship in the background. Note that each poster had a blank area at the bottom so that a local enlistment site could be added. Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! Artist: Sidney Reisenberg Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this war poster, and the last one was 6 years ago, when it sold for $888! Also note that, as noted above, the poster was created with a blank area at the bottom so that the specific enlistment site could overprint their information in that area. This specific poster was used in Baltimore, so that information it overprinted at the bottom of this poster. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had pinholes, tears, and small paper loss around the edges, with paper loss in the bottom right blank corner. It had creases, tears, and paper loss scattered in the image, more so in the bottom center, in the lower part of the Marine's jacket and in the upper part of his pants, with tears and small paper loss scattered across the bottom of the image. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
