An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World!, the classic 1951 Christian Nyby science fiction (sci-fi) monster horror thriller ("The Thing from another world!"; "How did it get here?"; "Natural or Supernatural?"; "Howard Hawks' Astounding Movie"; "Look out... it's The Thing from another world!"; produced by Howard Hawks; based on the story by John W. Campbell, best known for being the editor of Astounding Science Fiction!) starring Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan, Robert Cornthwaite, Dewey Martin, Paul Frees, John Dierkes, Eduard Franz, James Arness (in the title role as The Thing From Another World!), William Self, and Billy Curtis (as the miniature "Thing" in the final sequence when the monster appears to shrink). Note that this movie had a very unusual poster campaign, where the letters of the title were made to look like body parts ("blood and guts"!), with wires coming off of the letters. Almost all the posters had this basic design. The pressbook calls all of them "teaser" posters and says "This display material was designed for an advance teaser campaign, as well as for general use". So obviously, they intentionally wanted to have the posters not reveal much about the movie, as a way to get people interested and get them into the theater. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that many of the original posters from this classic sci-fi movie have only the title on them (but of course, it is the classic title composed of "blood and guts"). This style B half-sheet (which is even more rare than the style A half-sheet, and we have never auctioned it before!), however, has both that title image, plus a montage of seven images of the stars of the movie! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had an 11" tear that started near the middle of the left border and ended in the background to the left of the "T" of "THE" in the title. It also had a 4" tear in the upper left border that extended into the beard of the man at left and a 3" tear in the left of the top border that went into the background to the right of the "W" of "HOW". There were some other tears and small areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. There were some creases and scuffs scattered in the image. The collector who owned this poster had it paperbacked many years ago, and restoration was performed to the above defects, and he displayed the poster on his wall framed for many years. Over those years, the poster faded, and the red colors are now more of an orange color, and several of the inset images, which had been a sepia-like color, are now a greenish color, because the red component of them is gone. The poster would display well just as it is, except that the restoration paint on the 12" tear at middle left has not faded, so there is a red line on most of that tear. There is a similar 1" red mark in Sheridan's neck at upper right. I would think most collectors would choose to either solely have restoration performed to those two areas, but certainly, there are restorers talented enough that they could perform any higher level of restoration, adding reds back to the poster! And of course, it could be displayed just as it is! Obviously, one would prefer to find a better condition example of this super rare poster, but we have never auctioned another example of this poster (and have only seen one other much lesser condition example at other auctions). It might be many years before another example is offered for sale, and there is no saying that if this happens it will be in better condition! Learn More about condition grades
