He was the world heavyweight boxing champion from 1937 to 1950, winning 26 championship fights during that time. He enlisted in the army at the start of 1942, and served all the way until 1945! He passed away in 1981 at the age of 66. AND Woody Guthrie was a legendary singer-songwriter from the 1930s to the 1950s. He was one of the most significant figures in American folk music, and his work focused on themes of American socialism and anti-fascism. He has inspired several generations both politically and musically. In 1988, Woody was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2000, he was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. His son, Arlo, is probably better known to the modern generation, especially for his classic song "Alice's Restaurant". Tragically, he developed Huntington's disease and died a slow and painful death over many years, and he passed away in 1967 at the age of 55 Important Added Info: Note that this great 1946 candid shows folk singer Woody Guthrie with heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis.
