An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 41" x 81") (Learn More)

China Girl, the 1942 Henry Hathaway pre-World War II (WWII) military newsreel cameraman interracial romance romantic melodrama ("There's action every pounding moment!"; "The whole Jap army on his trail... a bewitching beauty in his heart!"; "Produced and Written by Ben Hecht"; although the movie was written after Pearl Harbor, it was set before the U.S. entered the war, and it is clear that writer/producer Ben Hecht was aiming to further inflame anti-Japanese sentiment in the U.S.; Montgomery is a newsreel photographer covering the war against Japan in China and Burma, and he falls for a half-Chinese girl played by strikingly beautiful Gene Tierney) starring Gene Tierney, George Montgomery, Lynn Bari, Victor McLaglen, Alan Baxter, Sig Ruman, Philip Ahn, and Robert Blake

Important Added Info: Note that it is not uncommon for the two parts of a three-sheet to not match up well, either in terms of the image matching up perfectly at the seam, or in the color not matching up. This occurred because they were making these posters so fast, and they just did not consider it a priority to have them match perfectly! In this particular poster, "China Girl", there is a difference in coloring between the bottom of the letters of "GIRL" and the top of the letters (because this is where the two pieces join), and there is also part of the "RL" that do not match up correctly. I personally do not find this very distracting, and it would surely be on every example of this poster (although, there is an excellent change that this might be the only surviving example!), but I wanted to bring it to the attention of all bidders.

Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were extremely well restored, OR it had some very minor defects that were not completely restored, and are somewhat noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). Note that we gave this condition grade to a very few posters that were in pretty good condition prior to linenbacking, but which were not all that well linenbacked, and which could be fairly easily re-backed with only minor additional restoration.

The poster had creases, smudges, small tears, and tiny paper loss along most foldlines. There was small paper loss at some crossfolds. There were tears and areas of paper loss near the center of the image in the top of the "N" of "CHINA" and extending into the top of the "A" of "CHINA". There were two 3" horizontal tears in the lower part of Bari's body in the top of her leg. There was a 5" tear in the lower right of the image starting in the background area below the "L" of "GIRL" and extending into the calf of Bari. There were some creases and smudges throughout the image. There was some paper loss across the bottom edge of the poster, and it may have been slightly trimmed in the blank white area. There were some creases, smudges, and tears in the other three borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well.
