An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More)

The Blue Dahlia, the classic 1946 George Marshall romantic crime murder film noir ("Double Dame Trouble! Double-Barreled Action!"; "Double-dame trouble on his hands... and a murder mob at his throat!"; "One's out to frame him... the other to tame him!"; "With 3 famous 'finds' from 'The Lost Weekend'"; "Written by Raymond Chandler"; "Produced by John Houseman"; Ladd is a veteran just back from the war who finds his wife having an affair, and she is murdered, and he is naturally the lead suspect; he gets the ex-wife of his wife's new lover, played by Lake, to help him, and together they solve the crime) starring Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, William Bendix, Howard da Silva, Doris Dowling, Frank Faylen, Tom Powers, Vera Marshe, Hugh Beaumont, and Walter Sande. Note that while many of Raymond Chandler's works were adapted to movies, this was the only one that Chandler wrote directly as a movie! Also note that by 1946, Alan Ladd had become a very top star, so on the advertising for this movie, his image dominates the posters, with Veronica Lake in the background, whereas when "This Gun For Hire" was released 4 years earlier, Ladd was pretty unknown, and Lake dominates the advertising for that movie (although Ladd does appear on the posters)! Also, note that a year after this film was released, a woman was murdered and newspapers dubbed it "The Black Dahlia" case in a morbid twist on this film's title.

Important Added Info: Note that this window card for this classic movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned it before! Also note that this window card was never folded. Often window cards would be folded across the middle, because that would make them 11" x 14", and they could then be sent with standard folded posters. Most collectors put an added value on a window card that has never been folded.

Condition: good. The card has pinholes in the blank corners and paper loss in the top right blank corner and paper loss and a 2" vertical tear above it in the center of the bottom border. The paper loss affects the "THO IN" of "LITHO IN U.S.A.", and the tear goes up in the "M" of Marshall's credit. There are light water stains in the bottom 1-2" of the card, with tiny brown dot stains in part of the title area above it. There are faint water stains in the top play dates area and a faint partial crease running through Bendix's forehead and across the bottom of his credit, with a few smaller partial creases in Ladd and Lake's credits. There are vertical scuff marks in the background down the left side of Ladd's head, slightly entering his ear, and continuing into his shoulder. Someone used the back of the card to advertise a different movie, and there is writing and a picture of a star glued to the back of the card, but because the card is on thick stock, what is on the back does not affect the front at all. This is the sort of card that responds really well to professional restoration. Most of the defects are the sort that can both be repaired and will not show after proper restoration. Our consignor asked if we thought this card should be restored prior to auction. We told him that we did not think so, both because this way all the bidders will see exactly what defects the card had, and they can also choose exactly which restorer to use, and how much restoration to have performed. Once this extremely rare window card has been properly restored, it will display incredibly on the new owner's wall!
