An Undated (probably 1940) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 47 1/2" x 63 3/4" [121 x 162 cm]) (Learn More) Le Roman D'un Tricheur (released in the U.S. in 1938 as "The Story of a Cheat" and released in other English-speaking countries as "Confessions of a Cheat"), the 1936 Sacha Guitry French romantic comedy (a clever story of a man who has a childhood experience where he is caught stealing, and he is not allowed to have dinner, but the food is poisoned, and everyone dies but him, which causes him to conclude that crime DOES pay, and he spends his life cheating [both in romance and in gambling], and the movie has four beautiful women who wander in and out of his life) starring Sacha Guitry, Marguerite Moreno, Jacqueline Delubac, Roger Duchesne, and Rosine Derean. Note that director/writer/star Sacha Guitry was a major figure of French cinema and French stage plays. He wrote his first play while still a teenager, and did not get involved with movies until he was 30, but then he wrote, directed, and sometimes starred in a huge volume of work, both on the stage and the screen. He was accused of collaborating with the Nazis in World War II, and although he was allowed to work again in 1947, his career was never the same. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie! What IS linenbacking? Learn More UPDATED 11/24/2010: Note that we initially listed this as a 1936 first release. However, an expert has informed us that it is a re-release from 1940. The image is very similar to that of the original, but there is different printing company information on the poster. Please do not bid thinking this is a 1936 first release. Condition: very good to fine. The poster had darkened slightly and there were some creases and tiny tears on parts of some foldlines, and some faint scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
