An Original Vintage Theatrical Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

Samuel Goldwyn's The Best Years of Our Lives, the classic 1946 William Wyler (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) return-from-World War II (WWII) romantic love triangle military veteran melodrama ("From the Novel by MacKinlay Kantor"; "The screen's greatest love story"; "Acclaimed by critics as 'The greatest picture to come from Hollywood in a long time'"; "Love that lives forever! Love that ends in hate!"; "Love that meets the test!"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; about three servicemen returning from World War II and the difficulties they face in returning to civilian life after years at war; one of the three is a man who lost his hands during the war, and he was played by a real life veteran) starring Myrna Loy, Fredric March (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Dana Andrews, Teresa Wright, Virginia Mayo, Hoagy Carmichael (the famous singer and composer in a fine acting role), Cathy O'Donnell, Harold Russell (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; the real-life veteran who lost his hands in WWII; he also won an Oscar for being an inspiration to all veterans, which makes him the only actor to win two Oscars for the same role!; O'Donnell & Russell are billed as "And introducing"), Steve Cochran, Gladys George, and Roman Bohnen. Note that this movie premiered in the U.S. in November of 1946 (no doubt to qualify for the Academy Awards), but all of the U.S. paper has a 1947 NSS number. Also note that Gladys George and Roman Bohnen played Dana Andrews' lower class parents, and gave fine performances. It is remarkable that Bohnen (a fine actor who looked much older than his actual age) was only six years older than Andrews, playing his father!

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this 1947 first release half-sheet! Also note that producer Samuel Goldwyn was clearly afraid of the subject matter of this movie (returning veterans and their difficulties after World War II), both because of the possible controversy, and also he was likely afraid that people would be "turned off" by the handless veteran at the center of the movie. So next-to-none of the advertising for the movie shows or mentions Harold Russell, and some of the advertising is amazingly deceptive, passing off the movie as looking like a romantic triangle comedy! The half-sheet offered here shows only romantic images of Virginia Mayo, Dana Andrews, Teresa Wright, and Cathy O'Donnell (who is hugging handless Harold Russell, but you don't see his face, and could never guess he has a handicap), and no one could possibly guess what the movie was truly about from seeing this image (although those actors DO form a romantic triangle in the movie, it is a small sub-plot, and certainly not the main focus of the movie by any means)!

Note that this poster was gel backed, and while it could be rolled and sent in a tube, we would worry that doing so would either damage the poster or bring back the folds. Therefore, we would much prefer to send it in a large flat package. However, if the new buyer insists, we will send it in a tube, but only if they accept responsibility for doing so.

Condition: good. Prior to gelbacking, the poster was folded down the middle at a slight diagonal and it had creases, tears, and some darkening along that fold. It had pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges, and a few creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the poster (meaning they backed the poster onto a gel material) and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the poster still exactly looks and feels like an original poster (and it is!), with no backing at all. You can see signs of the restoration, but the poster displays pretty well. Someone put a piece of clear tape in the center of the top and bottom blank borders, and there is a 1" tear in the middle of the bottom border that extends into the edge of the yellow background.
