An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card #2 (measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) This Island Earth, the 1955 Joseph M. Newman science fiction (sci-fi) thriller ("The supreme excitement of our time!"; "2 1/2 years in the making! ...to bring you sights of Fantastic Amazement never before possible on the motion picture screen!"; "Trapped amid the mysteries of outer space they challenged the unearthly furies of a planet gone mad!"; "In out-of-this-world color by Technicolor"; "The mortal's World is left behind!"; "Earthlings prepared for Outer Space!"; "Kidnapped in midair by giant Space Ship!"; "Pursued by the deadly rays of destruction"; "Crashing the blazing thermal barrier"; "Two mortals trapped in outer space... challenging the unearthly furies of a planet gone mad!"; based on the novel by Raymond F. Jones) starring Jeff Morrow, Faith Domergue, Rex Reason, Lance Fuller, and Russell Johnson. Note that some advertising material refers to the title as "This Island, Earth", while others (including the one-sheet) have "This Island Earth". Note that the wonderful alien creature costumes in this movie were created by a woman named Milicent Patrick, who you probably never heard of, but she deserves to be well remembered. She was a top pianist as a young girl, and she graduated from high school at 14. She went to work for Disney as an artist in the animation department in the late 1940s, and she was the first female hired by Disney in that capacity. In 1954, she designed the classic creature costume used in Creature From the Black Lagoon, but the head of the makeup department on that movie did all he could do to keep her from getting proper credit, and as a result, she left Universal around a year later. It is said that she also created some of the well known costumes in other Universal horror and sci-fi movies preceding this, but there is no clear record as to which ones (but some great monsters of this time, including the ones in this movie, "This Island Earth", seem to be unmistakably be her design). She turned to acting, appearing in a few movies and on TV, but she pretty much vanished in the early 1960s. She passed away in 1998 at the age of 82. She certainly deserves massive credit for her contributions to Creature From the Black Lagoon, this movie, and other great 1950s monster movies, but that may never happen. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Condition: very good. there are two large brown pieces of tape (approximately 1 1/2" x 4") on the back of the center of the card that have next-to-no effect on the front (and which seem to have been put there for no reason); there are eight tiny staple holes in the letters "N" and "D" of "ISLAND" at the top center of the card; there is a single pinhole to the left of the "I" of "ISLAND"; the card is rippled and creased around its edges and down the center as though it had been wet at one time, but it did not stain the front in any way; it just left the card rippled, which is more "felt" than seen; minor creases and faint smudges around the edges of the card. Since this card's minor defects are barely noticeable visually, I would think most collectors would be quite happy with it. But I also know that a restorer could remove the tape on the back and professionally flatten the card, and it would look wonderful without having any real restoration on it!
