(released in the U.S. in 1962 as "The Testament of Orpheus"), the 1959 Jean Cocteau French surreal semi-autobiographical melodrama starring Jean Cocteau, Edouard Dermithe, Jean Marais, Yul Brynner, and Michael Goodliffe NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Jean Cocteau Important Added Info: Note that this poster (which is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie) is extremely rare! We have never auctioned it before, and we have only seen it offered by anyone once over the years. There is a very similar one-panel poster, but this 15 1/2" x 24 1/4" has an extra color that the one-panel lacks! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had diagonal paper loss in all four corners. In three of the corners it was blank white paper only, and in the fourth corner, it cut slightly into the publisher's box (see our image). It had two tape stains in the bottom right, one in the bottom left, and tape bleed-through from a piece of tape that was on the back of "Orphee". It had a foreign stamp in the bottom right. There was bleed-through from a different foreign stamp in the lower left (in the area above "Jean"; see our image). The poster was folded across the middle and it had some faint creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed onto a thin linen with an excess 1" in the top and bottom, and replaced corner pieces (this may have been done prior to backing by a previous owner), but no other restoration of any kind. Certainly, it could be displayed just as it is, or a restorer could remove it from the thin linen and restore the above defects (which, fortunately, are mostly in the blank areas).
