HYDE Grosset & Dunlap hardcover book 1931 w/original dust jacket, ultra rare Date Sold 4/14/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5" x 7 1/2" [13 x 19 cm]; 234 pages) (Learn More) Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the 1931 Rouben Mamoulian double-personality fantasy monster horror thriller ("Based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson") starring Fredric March (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in both title roles; he tied with Wallace Beery who won for The Champ), Miriam Hopkins, Rose Hobart, Holmes Herbert, Edgar Norton, and Halliwell Hobbes. Note that this movie premiered in New York City on New Year's Eve 1931, and then went into general release in the U.S. in 1932. So except for that one night, it is a 1932 movie, but because it is always identified as being from 1931, we also identify it that way! That also helps explain why there is movie paper dated 1933. It was a giant hit, and the movie was surely still in its first release into 1933, and more paper was printed as it was needed. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this hardcover book, but that example had a reproduction dust jacket, while THIS example has the original dust jacket, so it is the only example with the original dust jacket we have ever auctioned. It also has a cool addition, which is a 2 1/2" x 7 3/4" bookmark that has an ad for a specific theater on one side, but has an ad for a library on the other side, so it seems that it would surely be given out with the book! Note that this is the Grosset & Dunlap photoplay edition of this novel in its original dust jacket. This book has the original dust jacket. Here are more details about these books: Grosset & Dunlap was a publisher that made a deal with all the studios in the 1910s to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies (there were also some by other publishers, but Grosset & Dunlap printed the lion's share of these). They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would usually include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s, and they are quite collectible, especially if they still have the original dust jacket! Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book. Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 30 movie edition books (and a few closely related items) that were consigned to us from a man who has collected such books for over half a century! Included are some of the most rare and desirable of these books, and all have the original dust jackets (many times such books lost their dust jackets over the years and they are far more rare with the dust jacket). This is a very rare opportunity to obtain one or more of these books, most of which we have either never auctioned before or only auctioned once before! Note: We have 14 images of this book, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 14 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 4. Condition: very good. The dust jacket has two small tears in the top left of the cover, in the shadow around the Hyde image. It is otherwise in pretty nice condition, with some scuffs on the back cover. The book itself is in pretty nice condition (see our many images). Learn More about condition grades
